Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was an only child. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was taking classes in secondary education. She hoped she would become an English secondary school teacher. It was impossible to realize her dream, however, when after studying for three years and working as a teaching assistant, she quit college. Her career began by doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. At a Roots show she made her debut as an artist. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Also, she was an actor in the Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
